Every once in a while, several technologies mature at almost exactly the same time…
When they do, they create something far bigger than any one of them could’ve created alone.
The smartphone is probably the best example of our lifetime.
Faster semiconductors, better batteries, wireless broadband, GPS, touchscreens, digital cameras, and cloud computing had all been advancing independently for years.
When they became good enough to work together inside one device, we didn’t just get a better telephone. We got an entirely new computing platform.
Healthcare may be approaching a similar moment today.
Yesterday, we looked specifically at how Elon Musk is spearheading the way AI could change how new drugs are discovered and designed. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
AI is now colliding with genomics, biotechnology, robotics, sensors, and medical devices at the same time.
Individually, each represents a major technological trend. Together, they could fundamentally change what medicine is capable of doing.
Consider how much has changed over the last decade.
The cost of sequencing genetic information has collapsed. Sensors have become small enough to wear continuously. Semiconductors can put sophisticated computing into tiny medical devices. Robots can perform movements with incredible precision. And AI has given us an entirely new way to interpret the staggering amount of biological information all those technologies produce.
For years, these advances largely developed along separate paths. Now those paths are beginning to cross.
A wearable device can continuously collect information from your body while AI analyzes it for changes that deserve attention.
Genetic information can help explain why two people with the same disease respond differently to the same treatment.
Increasingly sophisticated machines can help doctors diagnose, monitor, and treat patients with greater precision.
Over time, that could move healthcare away from simply reacting when something goes wrong, toward identifying problems earlier and tailoring treatments much more closely to the individual.
Modern medicine has accomplished extraordinary things, but much of it has historically been built around averages.
A treatment works for a certain percentage of patients, so doctors prescribe it to people with that condition. If it doesn’t work, they try something else.
But there really isn’t an “average” patient. We have different genetics, lifestyles, environments, medical histories, and biological responses. Until recently, gathering enough information about an individual and making sense of it was extraordinarily difficult.
Technology is changing both sides of that equation.
Wearables can continuously measure aspects of our health, and genetic sequencing can reveal biological differences that would’ve been invisible to doctors a generation ago.
AI can analyze enormous amounts of that information simultaneously.
The long-term possibility is medicine that becomes increasingly personalized, predictive, and preventative.
There’s another side of this convergence that I find even more fascinating. Technology isn’t only getting better at understanding the human body, it’s becoming increasingly capable of interacting directly with it.
We’ve been moving in this direction for decades. Pacemakers regulate human hearts. Cochlear implants stimulate the auditory nerve. Deep-brain stimulation uses implanted electrodes to help treat neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.
Now imagine what becomes possible when the next generation of medical devices combines smaller semiconductors, better sensors, advanced robotics, wireless connectivity, and AI.
Intuitive Surgical (ISRG), for example, has outlined a five-layer AI strategy built partly around data accumulated from more than 20 million da Vinci procedures. The goal is to use that intelligence to help improve surgical outcomes and reduce variability.
That’s convergence in action.
There are already publicly traded companies giving us a glimpse of where this could be headed.
Three very different companies, but all three are riding the same underlying trend that I’m trying to make clear to you: the boundaries between technology and medicine are disappearing.
That’s what gets me excited about the next decade of healthcare. This isn’t your average AI story or biotech story. It’s AI, genomics, robotics, semiconductors, sensors, and medical devices increasingly working together.
Yesterday, we looked at computers helping scientists create new medicines. Today, we’re seeing technology become increasingly capable of understanding and interacting with the human body itself.
Tomorrow, I’m going to focus on a healthcare market that’s already become enormous, but where I believe the next generation of treatments could be even bigger.
This is all part of the next Musk Stampede. Remember, Musk has an impeccable talent of recognizing an enormous opportunity early. He helps prove it can work, and then reaps the benefits while everyone else rushes in.
Elon’s now targeting the intersection of AI, machines, and human biology.
